Sextant 2007 Zinfandel
Once you get over the name, this is an excellent buy in Red Zinfandel. I brought this wine over to a friends house Christmas Day and it received unanimous approval. Everyone though it drank like a $20+ Zinfandel. Gobs of jammy plum & cherry flavors finishing up with nice pepper and spice. Wine Spectator gave this wine 88pts (only 1275 cases made)
2006 Sabor Real Toro
Wine Advocate # 178Aug 2008 Jay Miller 90 Drink: N/A $10-$13 (13) The 2006 Toro was aged in French and American oak, 50% new. Purple colored, it has an excellent, slightly roasted perfume with notes of wood smoke, scorched earth, espresso, and blackberry. Full-bodied, fat, and well-endowed on the palate, the wine has gobs of spicy, forward fruit, excellent balance, and enough structure to last for another 8 years. It is a spectacular value in Toro that totally over-delivers for its bargain basement price. This is one to buy by the case.
The Bodegas was started in 2003 and all of the wines are produced from estate owned Tinta de Toro vines, most of them over 80 years of age.
Spain continues to pump put amazing wine values. This 2006 Toro is made in the "old world" style. Rustic & full-bodied, this wine delivers smoky aromas, blackberry fruit flavors & spice finishing up with firmness. Robert Parker gave this wine 90PTS and states "A spectacular value in Toro that totally over-delivers for its bargain basement price. This is one to buy by the case."
Charles Krug Yountville 2006 Cabernet
When you have been in this business for years, one thing you start to notice is consistency with certain producers. One fine example is Charles Krug winery. Year in and year out, their Cabernet's are always excellent. The recent 2006 vintage is no exception. The 2006 Yountville has classic black currant, spice and solid oak on the finish. If you like your Cabernet as dry as the Sahara, this is the one for you. This wine just got 91 points in the Wine Enthusiast!
Beaulieu Vineyards 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon
Hard to find a better deal in California Cabernet these days. I recently tasted this wine and as amazed at how good it is for the price, $16.99!. It has delicious flavors of currant, black cherry finishing with sturdy oak. Wine Enthusiast just gave this wine a 92 point rating stating "no one in Napa Valley could produce a Cabernet of this pedigree, at this price beside Beaulieu". There were only 28 cases available for NYS when I bought this for the store so it will not be around for long!

Red Blend, Catalunya, $10
A Best Buy
A perennial Best Buy, Sangre de Toro always delivers a quality red-wine experience that does not bowl you over. Here the aromas are light and jammy, with strawberry. The body is medium in weight and intensity, with pure but basic cherry, raspberry and plum flavors. Like all other parts of the wine, the finish is easy and clean, with carry-over flavors of berry fruit. — M.S. (4/1/2009)

2006 Poet's Leap
Riesling, Columbia Valley (WA), $20
An Editors' Choice
Poet’s Leap is the Long Shadows collaboration with Armin Diel of Germany’s Schlossgut Diel. Ripe pear, melon, and white peach mingle with a streak of honey. Old Yakima Valley vines contribute concentration, adding herb and mineral to the fruit. The residual sugar is about 1.4%, keeping the alcohol just under 13%, with acids that keep flavors buoyant and precise. — P.G. (5/1/2008)

2005 Geyser Peak Block Collection Walking Tree
Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley, $25
An Editors' Choice
Youthful tannins and ageability always characterize this Cab, which contains a splash of Syrah. Like its predecessors, it’s very dry, with herb-infused cherry and currant flavors, and new oak plays only a supporting role. It’s really an elegant wine and a great value at this price. — S.H. (12/15/2008)
